A Horse's View Of The World

I find horses so fascinating and they are often smarter than we realize. I have boarded in very large commercial stables, and one can walk down the aisle and it is obvious that all those horses have unique personalities, different expressions on the their faces and, like people, their eyes tell alot. It is with this in mind that my blog will often be from a horses point of view, at least as I see it.

THEY'VE GOT ME GOING IN CIRCLES!!!

Well, we've had 2 lessons - and today, I think I finally got it. The deal is this - when I go with my nose in the air, SHE turns me gently to the inside with the inside rein - and SHE will not quit turning until I put my nose down and take the bit. As soon as I take the bit and put my head down, she releases me immediately but if my head starts up again, SHE turns me again and again and again if necessary. I got tired of turning in those circles so I decided to go with the flow (most of the time). This inside rein turning is intended to be used for nearly all disobediences - today a big truck went by the arena and, of course, I wanted to throw my head and tail up and do the Arab thing (don't mean to offend arabs but they do this the best). She started to turn me in that darn circle but I put my head down and went to work instead. BOY, WAS SHE HAPPY. I heard SHE and the trainer talking about - "when he really gets this we will shorten the reins abit and go for some collection and shorten the frame." I don't know what this means - but it sounds like harder work - with the small circles being the key - if I put my head up, refuse to bend at the poll or tighten my jaw. Well, I will just see how determined SHE will be and then I will decide if I will work that hard. BUT SHE has a softer hand and has taken those forever SQUEEZING legs off my sides WHICK IS WORSE THAN THE CIRCLES. Oh yes, SHE was very happy because she/we had a 45 minture lesson at the trot with no rests and the OLD GAL didn't have to stop for breather!! (neither did I).
